CSSD Exhibtion

Exploring the parallels between spoken language and design, on September 8th, 2021 I lead a devising workshop as part of the MA/MFA Scenography Exhibition at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Together with the audience, we worked together to devise and tell a story using shadows and the frames as seen below. As we worked, we were not to speak or make any vocal noise. The process and final piece will not include any spoken on written words.

This is an experiment to see how humans communicate visually and gesturally without using spoken language.

This video is a recording of the entire process sped up. I created the first frame of a story, arbitrarily off the top of my head, it was a dog barking at the window. You can see multiple people working on one frame. To explain what to do to each group, I used a piece of paper with "..." on it. I would point to the prior frame of the story, use the "..." and then shrug my shoulders.

At the end of the video, you can see the finished product, and images of each frame.
